Arsenal unexpectedly offers 20 million Euros for a 17-year-old midfielder attracting attention in Serbia and pursued by many European clubs.
Arsenal is intensifying its squad rejuvenation strategy by targeting a promising talent from Serbian football. According to multiple European sources, the North London club has submitted a 20 million Euro bid to recruit young midfielder Vasilije Kostov, a player compared by FourFourTwo to Pedri due to his creative playstyle and impressive ball control.
Recently, Arsenal has clearly demonstrated its commitment to trusting young players. Last weekend, Mikel Arteta's team became the first club to field a starting lineup featuring two players aged 16 or younger in their 2-1 victory over Mansfield Town in the FA Cup fifth round. This is seen as a signal that Arsenal continues to invest heavily in its next generation.
According to FourFourTwo, Arsenal will not engage in lavish spending like last summer when they brought in eight new signings. Instead, the Emirates-based club is expected to focus on a few key positions, including the midfield. Currently, names like Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi remain the primary options, but the coaching staff wants to add more depth to the squad.
In this context, Kostov emerges as a notable target. The 17-year-old player, under contract with Red Star Belgrade, has made waves domestically by becoming the youngest scorer in the famous derby between Red Star and Partizan Belgrade. Shortly thereafter, he was also granted the opportunity to debut for the Serbian national team.
Nevertheless, Arsenal is not the only club pursuing this young talent. Inter Milan and Marseille are also reportedly closely monitoring the situation. Inter is even considered to have a certain advantage in the deal, as coach Dejan Stankovic has had many years of association with the Milan-based club.
On the other hand, Arsenal still possesses many young talents developed from its academy, such as Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly. Therefore, the recruitment of Kostov in the upcoming summer remains an open question, though the club's leadership is reportedly very impressed with the Serbian midfielder's developmental potential.
